Terms of use

A safe place for prayer.

The rules for sela: what you can expect from us and what we expect from you. This is a translation; the German version is binding.

Last updated: October 2026

1. Who we are and what these terms cover

sela is a prayer app by ICF Zürich (association, UID CHE-107.344.636, Zürichstrasse 131, 8600 Dübendorf, Switzerland). These terms apply to the sela app and the website selaprayer.app.

By registering, you agree to them; we store when you agreed to which version. How we handle your data is set out in the privacy notice, which applies in addition.

2. What sela is

sela is a Christian place for prayer. You can write prayer requests, comments and journal entries (text, images, voice notes), share them in Spaces and pray for others. Without an account, your content stays on your device only and is gone if you delete the app.

sela is free. Donations are voluntary and give no claim to services or features. We keep developing sela; features may change, be added or be removed.

3. Your account

  • sela is intended for people aged 16 and over. Younger people may only use the app with the consent of their parents or legal guardians.
  • Use your real name and email address. Each person should have one account.
  • Keep your password, sign-in codes and your Google or Apple login secret. If you notice misuse, contact us right away.
  • You can delete your account in the app at any time.

4. Your content

  • Your requests, comments, journal entries, images and voice notes belong to you. So that sela works, you grant ICF Zürich the simple, non-exclusive right, limited to the lifetime of your account, to store them, process them technically (for example to check or resize images) and show them to others in the app according to your settings. We do not use your content for advertising and we do not sell it.
  • You hold the rights to what you upload or write, and it does not infringe the rights of others.
  • The Space decides who sees what: a private Space only you, a shared Space only its members, your journal only you. A public Space can be found by all signed-in users (name, description, location, cover image); only members see the requests in it. Public Spaces are not stored encrypted – if you make a Space public, please tell its members first.
  • Members of a Space can read, quote and pass on content; we have no control over that. Only share what you want to share, and don't pass on what was entrusted to you without consent. Only post other people's health details, names or personal circumstances with their consent.
  • You can delete content at any time. Deleted journal entries stay in the trash for 30 days. Posts that others have quoted or commented on may remain with them in anonymised form.

5. How we treat each other

sela should be a safe place, including for people going through hard times. We expect respect, even when people believe or think differently, and we have no tolerance for objectionable content or abuse. In particular, the following are not allowed:

  • violence, threats, hate speech, discrimination, insults, harassment and bullying,
  • pornographic or sexual content and anything that endangers or sexualises children,
  • private information about others without their consent,
  • spam, advertising, chain letters, fraud and impersonating another person,
  • breaking the law, attacking our systems, automated scraping of content and commercial use without our permission.

6. Reporting, moderation and appeals

  • Reporting and blocking: You can report people, requests, comments and Spaces in the app and block other people. We don't read along continuously; moderation happens in response to reports.
  • Who reviews: Reports are reviewed by authorised moderators from ICF Zürich. They only see the reported text for public Spaces; for private and shared Spaces they only see that something was reported, and any image. Uploaded images and videos are also checked automatically and may be rejected or flagged for review by a person.
  • Measures: In case of violations we may hide content, remove people from a Space or suspend accounts, depending on severity and repetition; in minor cases we give a warning first. If an account is suspended for misuse, we store an irreversible hash of the email address or the Google or Apple ID so that a new account can't be created straight away. Anyone who repeatedly makes obviously unfounded reports may also face measures.
  • Reasons and appeals: We tell you what we did and why, unless this is legally prohibited or would put others at risk. You can appeal a measure or an automatic rejection by email to [email protected]. We review the case again, where possible by a different person, and reply within 30 days.

7. No substitute for pastoral care, therapy or emergency help

sela does not replace medical, psychological, pastoral, legal or financial advice, nor emergency help. We cannot respond to individual requests. Prayer can give support, but we promise neither particular outcomes nor healing.

If you see yourself or someone else in acute danger, contact the emergency services or a helpline immediately:

  • Switzerland: ambulance 144, police 117, Die Dargebotene Hand 143
  • Germany: emergency number 112, Telefonseelsorge 0800 111 0 111 or 0800 111 0 222 (free, around the clock) and 116 123

8. Rights of ICF Zürich and third parties

  • Prayers, devotionals, texts and design are protected by copyright and belong to ICF Zürich or the named rights holders. You may use them privately and share them using the app's features; any other use requires our consent.
  • Bible texts are taken from Hoffnung für alle (HFA), © Biblica; the licence notice is in the imprint. If you share Bible text, please keep the source and copyright notice.
  • You receive the personal, non-transferable right to use the app for your own purposes. Copying, modifying or reverse-engineering it is not allowed, except where the law expressly permits it.

9. Availability and liability

We do our best to provide sela reliably, but cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability. If we decide to discontinue sela, we will announce it at least 30 days in advance and let you back up your content where technically possible.

We are liable without limitation for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, and where mandatory law requires it. In cases of slight negligence we are only liable for breach of essential obligations and only up to the typical, foreseeable damage. Other users are responsible for their own content and behaviour; this does not affect our obligations regarding reports (section 6) or claims under data protection law. It's best to keep your own copy of important content, especially if you use sela without an account.

10. Termination and changes

You can stop using sela and delete your account at any time. We may suspend your account or end your use if you breach these terms or there is another important reason; where appropriate, we will give notice beforehand.

We will inform you of material changes to these terms at least 30 days in advance in the app or by email and, where necessary, ask for your consent. If you don't agree, you can delete your account. If the purposes for which we process prayer content change, we will ask for your consent again.

11. App stores and final provisions

  • When downloading through Apple or Google, their terms also apply. These terms apply between you and ICF Zürich; Apple and Google are not responsible for the app or its support.
  • Swiss law applies. Mandatory consumer protection rules of your country of residence remain unaffected.
  • The place of jurisdiction is the seat of ICF Zürich in Dübendorf, where permitted. For consumers, the statutory places of jurisdiction apply.
  • If any provision is invalid, the remaining provisions stay valid.
  • The German version is binding.
